How to Handle Power Struggles with Shawn Edwards

I recently spoke with my amazing friend and colleague Shawn Edwards about the hot (and challenging!) topic of power struggles with our children. On my, did I come away with some ahas and useful food for thought, and I’m excited to share our conversation with you today.

Before we get to the conversation, a bit about Shawn: She’s a 30+ year Montessorian, a Positive Discipline Trainer, and a Life Coach. Her business ToolHows provides “how to” tools for parents and schools. In addition to working directly with children, parents, and school staff, as well as leading trainings and workshops over her tenure as a teacher, trainer, and coach, she is a mother of three — so she knows firsthand the challenges of parenting!

In our conversation, we dive into power struggles with our children* and what we can do when they happen + how to set ourselves and our families up for success and fewer struggles in the future. Key learnings and “how tos” include:

  • The surprising time our kids don’t want to be in control (as well as when they do)
  • Why being the thermostat, rather than the thermometer, is mission critical to a peaceful home
  • How considering what behaviors you may be unintentionally inviting can help you see more of the behaviors you want
  • The best time to have a conversation about a hot (i.e., contentious) topic
  • How responding to the need rather than reacting to the behavior will ultimately work wonders with your child

We cover all of these things and so much more! Dive in with us here:
