So, where does communication happen? Perhaps an easy and obvious answer: Everywhere and anywhere.
Communication can be in person or over the phone (or computer!), close up or far away, via speech, writing, or body language. Every day we are communicating (exchanging news and information!) with those around us. Communication isn’t a one size fits all thing.
Now for children working to practice and improve their communication and speech (especially for those kiddos who’ve found speech more challenging), how can we best help them? Well, a great place to start is remembering that communication happens everywhere (and not just at a certain time, doing specific exercises, in front of a mirror or in a therapy session). And then from here, the potential to practice and improve their speech and oral skills shows up all around them: while asking them about their day or what they want to eat, during a game (you could even make a game out of an oral exercise!), when starting to clean up and get ready for bed, as well as any other part of their day!
Here at Kolby Kail Speech Therapy, we practice speech and oral exercises at a table and on the floor, while moving and being still. We do this because practicing in a variety of environments helps the body learn to make adjustments keeping the message, verbal and nonverbal, clear. 🙂
